Langan Bay History

The name Langan Bay originated by the first homestead along the bay's south shore on Rolling Acres Drive off 214th Street. Jim Langan purchased the first parcel of a new development just off Southshore Drive in 1974 from Don Smith. Don Smith, a farmer who knew Jim Langan, had a farm located along the south shore of the lake. His cattle grazed along the rolling hills of Lake Minnewaska. Langan was a fellow farmer from Clontarf, Minnesota and together he and his brother Jack Langan ran Langan Farms in Swift County and the two families spent their summers and holidays at the lake in Pope County next door.

The Langan home spurred on a development of other lake homes along the south shore and eventually Jack’s son (Jim Langan’s nephew), Patrick Langan, built a second Langan home in the same bay. The Bay was known locally as Langan Bay with pontoons, fishing boats, water skiers and wakeboarders going between the two cabins.
